With the economy in the state that it is in, many people are putting the idea of taking vacation time on the back burner. Many have figured out that making a vacation a “stay-cation” is not only a great way to get the most out of your money, but also a great way to split up vacation time into a few long weekend getaways. My wife Emily and I like to incorporate fly fishing into our getaways. Well, she actually tolerates me incorporating fly fishing into our getaways. Emily does like to fish on occasion, but she is just as happy going shopping while I fish, or sitting on the bank taking pictures or reading a book. For the next three articles, we will be featuring three great locations that are friends of Fly Rod Chronicles. These three places offer fantastic fishing, beautiful scenery and luxurious accommodations.
Rose River Farm (www.roseriverfarm.com), located in Syria, Va., is not only a short drive for me from southwestern Virginia, but also Northern Virginia, Richmond and Washington D.C. The owner, Douglas Dear, has allowed Project Healing Waters to hold their major fundraiser there and has hosted Curtis and the crew on several occasions. Douglas is a wonderful person who just so happens to have a beautiful piece of property with a great stream that holds some of the most acrobatic and hardest fighting trout that I have ever caught. Accessibility is not a problem at all here and wading is fairly easy as well. Douglas limits the number of rods allowed on the stream and closes for the season during the hot, low water months of the summer to protect the beautiful finned treasures that are swimming around.
There are also two beautiful new cabins that just opened this year. The luxury that the cabins provide is amazing. They are built in the Yurt style and are located just down the road from the stream and are absolutely beautiful. They are stocked with everything that you need, with the exception of food and drink, of course. But the farm does offer beef and some fantastic wines! There is plenty of room for the whole family, yet it is cozy enough for a weekend sweetheart getaway. There is also hiking, biking, shopping and nearby fishing opportunities, aside from the Rose itself.
So if you are looking for a nice weekend getaway or a place where you and some of your fishing partners can go, catch a ton of fish and have a nice place to stay, be sure to include Rose River Farm on your list. You will be glad you did!
