January 2012

For our third and final “staycation” vacation segment, we are just a short drive from December’s location. Harman’s Cabins (www.wvlogcabins.com) is another premiere getaway located in Wild Wonderful West Virginia. Todd Harman has a beautiful place here with 20 cabins that will accommodate from 2 to 8 people, so a getaway with the whole family or just you and your significant other is possible. These are not your run-of-the-mill cabins here…think luxury, with a covered porch overlooking a little piece of heaven. The cabins are fully equipped…just bring your groceries. They all have either a hot tub or a Jacuzzi tub and there is no extra charge for the view. The trout await only a few steps away from most of the cabins.

The fishing here is fantastic and Harman’s hosts a fly competition that has been featured on Fly Rod Chronicles  that attracts some heavy hitters from the competitive fly fishing world. The North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac is the water that you will find just outside of your cabin door, and it is managed by the staff very well as a trout fishery. The hard fighting rainbow trout here can be huge, so the opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime is certainly there. Check out their website and see the monstrous trout pictures for yourself; there are some real beasts swimming around in the water there. Although there is some great hunting in the area, the popping that can be frequently heard at Harman’s is more than likely not hunters taking shots at the deer in the area, but the sound of big fish breaking tippets, so I’d recommend fishing with your “big boy” gear!

If you forget to bring your heavy tippet material, you are in luck because there is a shop on site as well. Besides the fishing, one of the things that attracts people to visit here are the other activities available on the property and within close proximity. Mountain biking, hiking, golf and whitewater rafting are just a couple of the things that can be found within a short drive. Again, the mountains here are awe-inspiring, so just a walk around the property taking in the beauty is a must.

Harman’s should definitely make every fisherman’s “bucket list”. Look for them to be featured again on Fly Rod Chronicles soon, but I will tell you that video and pictures just do not do the scenery or the fishing justice.
